Permanent #243: Beaches Beer and Ferries

Ride Date: April 10, 2026

My first permanent ride in 15 months.

I pushed off at 7:05 am from Union Market in East Vancouver and was glad to see there was no train crossing causing delays as has happened sometimes.

The highlight of this ride apart from the stunning scenery was that no uncanny events took place and I got into a beautiful zen state and nearly flawless rhythm for almost the entire ride.

Once in a while you get a ride where everything just flows and this was one of them.

My only complaint was that the water tap in the men’s room in Whytecliff Park was’t working.

The ‘Ferries’ ride is the same as Barry’s Beaches and Beer, except that it diverges at Dyke Rd and Boundary and carries on to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal via a side trip to the George C Reifel Bird Sanctuary, see photo.

Finished bang on 10:30 pm for a time of 15h, 25m, 16 minutes off my brevet time last July including the longer permanents distance.

I’m still working on making sure I eat and drink enough.

BTW, the beer is optional!

(from the editor: sorry Barry, I lost this one in my email)
