Main ---> Part V - Conclusion British long distance racing is an alternative model to randonneur cycling. As is the case with randonneur cycling, the British sport is organized around events of ultramarathon distances. As is the case in the French sport, success in the British model depends on physical endurancce, mental toughness and self-reliance. Like the French sport as well, the British sport is deeply rooted in the history of cycling. The British sport, however, unlike French long distance cycling, is expressly competitive. Despite the similarity of the events in which they participate, the culture of those who participate in French randonnees and that of those who participate in British-style time trials remains as far apart as when the two sports first touched at Bordeaux-Paris in 1891. |
